when bad things happen to good furniture

The other night I was cruising around with Craig… Well, Craigslist to be exact. It’s one of my favorite pastimes…searching for treasures. When I came across this baby my heart gave an extra pitter patter or two. Look at the lines on this piece… GORGEOUS. It had been in one woman’s home for the past 40 years or so. It was in EXCELLENT condition. A Frenchy dream come true.  I talked the seller down $50 from his original asking price and loaded this girlie up to bring her home.

It would be appropriate at this moment to cue the music from JAWS or some other horror movie. You know. That creepy music that lets you know that this perfect story is about to have a very bad bump.

As my sweet hubby starting pulling this off the back of the truck he lost his grip… I saw several things happening in slow motion. The piece falling. My 14 year old standing still and doing NOTHING to help. My hubby trying his best to get a grasp on the piece. I also HEARD wood breaking. I almost had a come a loose a nervous breakdown. Upon examination it wasn’t AS bad as I feared, although there were now some issues to be figured out.

You can see where one chunk broke off here… We have the piece to glue back on…..

This is where the most damage was done…. This area was crushed, and the wood was seriously damaged. Sweet hubby is working on repairing this section now.

I was all depressed at first, because I thought this was the “perfect piece’. My sweet Andrew then reminded me that none of these pieces are perfect. That’s why we take them and try to give them new life. We bring them up to date, so they can have long happy lives with a new family. SO, I pushed my unhappiness aside and started making plans for this beauty. I know she will still be amazing even after her little fall…. Aren’t these little “beauty” marks what gives us all character?? I know I have a few of these myself.  :) Be watching for this lady’s extreme makeover. I also have several afters that I’ll be sharing this week.

love and hugs,

Loved this story! I can just see you as the fall was taking place. Wish someone had gotten a shot of that!
Great sentiment about the "perfect piece". Let us see it when you are finished working your magic. Hugs, Ginger

Oh man! This just happened to me last weekend. I had just finished painting the desk and was then painting the drawers when I knocked the desk over, face down on the concrete. It was ugly!
