Carol brady called and said she wanted her lamp back.

I’ve been scoping out all my local thrift stores for a floor lamp for my living room. We REALLY needed one in there, but I didn’t want to cough up the $100 or so a good floor lamp usually costs. I spotted this tacky lovely lamp and thought it could be a great piece with some TLC. Let’s face it though: This sucker was plain ugly to begin with. The shade was SO horrible I didn’t even bring it out of the store… There was NOTHING I could do to save it! LOL! They had a price tag of $25 on it, but there was NO way I was paying that… I talked them down to $15. THAT was WAY more reasonable to me, since I’m so cheap thrifty.

As tacky as it was though, I could see the potential in all these nooks and crannies…. They screamed to be distressed… “Please distress us!”

012

We had been using this out on the carport for extra lighting, and the base got a little coating of primer.  :) You can still see the ugly though.

011

I spray painted the base using (what else?) Rustoleum’s Heirloom White and distressed it with my sanding sponge.

004

This picture is horrible, but I gave it a good wipe down with some diluted antiquing medium by FolkArt. I wiped down all those details a few times to make sure they got a good dose…..

Yesterday I found this perfect lampshade for $12 at TJ Maxx. I’m going to recover it with burlap and add some ribbon trim sometime or another.  I think it looks a little bit plain but cute enough for now.

I love the chain that hangs down. I painted all the metal parts with ORB to give them a little updating.

Here’s the base now…. I moved a HUGE basket from this spot that was holding extra blankets and pillows. I swept but now notice that these baseboards need a GOOD cleaning… I guess I could’ve freaked out and done it before I took any pictures, but I’m just keeping it real, peeps…. The baseboards are dirty, and the floor needs mopping :)

This corner needed a punch of light… It brightens up the entire room, and I love the contrast of the off white on my rainwashed wall.

So, when Carol Brady requested her lamp back I told her, “No way, sista!” This lamp may have started out as a 70’s nightmare, but I think she’s now officially been “cuted up”.

Love and hugs,

lol you crack me up! I have two of these lamps in my home, we call them Standard Lamps here in NZ. I actually still have the granny shades on mine, a sage green one and a dusky pink complete with fringing - love them! I also painted and distressed the wooden parts with an off white. They add a real character to a room with their lovely light, I think :)

This is a really cute lamp! Like how you distressed it and added a more up to date shade. I like adding modern shades to older lamps. Looks great!

"Oh, Mi-ike, can't we find a way to find that lamp? The bedroom just isn't the same without that la-amp."

Seriously, I would have walked right past it, but you had great vision!

It turned out so great! I have a similar one that I painted too. I had a hard time finding a shade big enough for it so you were lucky! I see an old key or something hanging from that cute pull cord too.

Very cute! Love everything you did! I keep running into your nightmare but mine involves coat racks instead of floor lamps, LOL
