it was meant to be mine.

When I went to pick up this piece of furniture I found on Craigslist I REALLY intended to rehab and sell it…. Really. I promise. DSCN0791

The ad had this piece priced at $175, but I got them to come down to $125. The thing was they had to get it out of their space immediately. Right that minute. My sweet hubby is such a trooper. He borrowed our neighbor’s truck and went with me to get it right in the middle of his football game. His AUBURN football game. THAT is what I call true love…. Anyway, this piece had a rocky start that you can read about here.

After looking at her for a week or so I got that creeping feeling… You know. That feeling that says, “I’m gonna pretend like I’m gonna sell this, but I’m really doing it for me” kinda feeling. For some reason Andrew wasn’t surprised when I announced that this baby was staying with us. He knew she was SO ME. :)

I wanted this cabinet to look old French country… I wanted it to look like we plucked it out of an old French farmhouse (not that I’ve ever been in one… I just like to pretend like I know what they look like). I decided on using 2 shades of gray by Sherwin Williams: French gray and light French gray. Have I mentioned that I decided I wanted this done and finished in less than 2 days when my friend was visiting from Chicago? Yeah. That’s how I roll…. SO, after a day of prepping it and a day of painting it she was in her spot of glory in our dining area.

I didn’t get a chance to distress and glaze it until AFTER my friend left. It sat there looking all flat for about 5 days, and I was going CRAZY to get my hands on it…..

FINALLY I found the couple of hours I needed to finish her, and I was THRILLED with the end product… Peeps, here she is:

Squeal!! She’s just like I pictured she would be…. Now I’ll shut up and just have a picture parade!

The view from the side door where we enter the house:

012

A little distressing with some Valspar antiquing glaze….

013

We took the original wire out and painted it with some ORB to give it a new look. I love all my white ironstone up against that gray.

014

We painted the drawer fronts and back of the cabinet French gray. The rest of the piece is done in light French gray. We kept the original hardware and painted it with ORB.

015

LOVE the legs.

A peek inside :)

020

We painted the hinges and just roughed them up a bit with a sanding block. I JUST noticed the paint drip in this picture! ARGHHHH. Gotta go grab some fine grit sandpaper to fix that….

I have no “keepers regret” what so ever….This piece was meant to live in my house. I don’t see myself ever selling it…. For me it’s perfect… Remember when I told you that I wanted this done in 2 days?? What I failed to mention is that I also stripped, restained, and repainted my table and chairs at the same time! Talk about overdoing it… I was exhausted for a week!!! I still haven’t glazed the table, and I have to distress and glaze the chairs… Whew! One day I’m sure I’ll find the time to finish. Until then I’m just lovin’ it like it is….

Love and hugs,

Hi Loulou, it's so very French Country! Love the color tones you chose, and the distressing. That little baby would cost a fortune in a boutique space! Well done, and yep, I agree , she's a keeper! tami

Wow, that is really pretty. I love the colors and all the glazing and distressing that you did.

I know what you mean about the time frame. Last time I was at my brother's house, I got the bright idea to wax his painted dining room table. Something about the paint interfered with the wax and made a mess.

When I go back in a few weeks, I'll have a day or maybe 2 to fix, prime, and paint this table. And it's not even my table, so there is double stress of knowing I have to fix someone else's furniture.

But don't rush on your chairs. After all you did this week, you deserve a rest. Having the house the way you want it isn't worth exhausting yourself over!

Sorry if this got posted twice. It wasn't showing after a slow reload so I posted it again.

Great piece, Loulou! I love how it turned out and I love the wire look; I thought it looked more prominent and I think it was a good idea to paint it. Fits your space great, too!

I am struggling to get through the same kind of project with my old hutch because of time limitations. It's been a few months since I started it. Check it out on my blog at lilyoake.blogspot.com. I am taking the Swedish Gustavian approach. Your hutch turned out beautiful and it inspires me to keep on with mine.
I will check your blog often to see what else you are revamping!

That is gorgeous, I think it looks totally French Country even though I have never been in a french farmhouse either, lol. I know that creeping feeling very very well and have experienced it several times. Luckily I have a great husband who just goes with the flow!

Talk about changing the look. My daughter does the same kind of thing which makes the ordinary into something special. Since you like Frence country, there are wonderful lideas on Cote de Texas.
