big boy blue

We had a ball doing this piece! Everything about it was fun.. the shape, the details, the COLOR, the funkiness…..

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a shop owner from my hometown. She originally wanted something to store a new line of candles in, and she asked me for suggestions for a piece to use. I asked her, “How about a big old funky china cabinet?”.  I sent her this picture, and she loved it.

I talked to her to get a feel for the look she wanted. She told me she wanted fun and funky and that I could do ANYTHING I wanted.  The owner had seen my china cabinet redo and requested wire in the doors like I had in mine.

I showed her a few pieces of furniture I had done in my home… She wanted a green color and loved the blue I used in this piece.

011

Since she loved this piece so much I painted the cabinet this exact color (halycon green by Sherwin Williams) but left the interior in the wood finish to have the contrast like the table above.

This is what she looks like today:

022

LOVE!

023

We used chicken wire sprayed with hammered bronze for the doors…. Doesn’t it looks so “old farmhouse Frenchy”?

024

I don’t know if you noticed the hardware in the “before” shot, but it was huge, clunky, outdated, and plain UGLY. These doors already have such amazing detail, and those pulls were overkill. We filled the original holes with wood filler, but since the doors aren’t regular wood (they’re this strange plasticy kinda wood?) the holes were still visible after sanding and painting. Since she had given me the go ahead to do do anything I wanted I decided to modge podge this texted scrapbook paper to cover the holes. The doors have magnetic closures and open easily with a touch. They really didn’t NEED pulls.  After they were attached I glazed over the wood and sealed it with a protective spray.

026

Another shot of the doors with  distressing and glazing. The bottom moulding was damaged, so we replaced all of it…

027

028

There is great storage in this piece including that pull out drawer on the right side…

Today the owner texted me that she can’t pick it up as planned this morning because of the rain. She also said that the shop may never see this piece, because she loves it so much she wants it in her house. I’m always thrilled when people are happy with what we’ve done for them.

Once more. Before                           and after:

AWESOME!!! Love the blue . Fantastic transformation for Met Monday. Thanks for sharing the change. I can see why she wanted to put it in her nest instead of her shop.... :-)

Wonderfully and beautifully done! I love the "bronzed" chicken wire! I'm thinking of doing this to a built in hutch in my mobile home cuz you've kicked my brain into gear. Thanks!

I loved that...and it's much better than the one my husband got his hands on...he made his into a gun cabinet! ;D

Gorgeous, Lou! I think the paper that you used to cover the holes actually worked out being a nice decorative touch. Between the color, the paper, and the wire - very French looking for sure! : )

Woa. That was obviously a labor of love. I would not have been able to come up with such a great solution for the wood-filling problem as you did, yet it turned out great. I like your idea of chicken wire to make it very rustic farmhouse French. I will keep that in mind when I eventually tackle a china cabinet in my garage :)
